| Have you ever been sitting in a café, or in a supermarket, and heard snatches of a conversation in a foreign language, and wished you knew what they were saying? Many people have, and many are beginning to do something about it. Learning a language is not necessarily expensive or time consuming. There is a wealth of information on the internet, in bookstores, and even online courses that can have you speaking at least the basics of a language in a short period of time, and with a minimum of time investment. Learning a language is not only fun, but can provide a serious sense of self accomplishment that is intensely gratifying. The only things you have to decide are, which language would benefit you the most, which program you decide to utilize, and what kind of commitment you are willing to make in order to achieve your goals. Choosing a language should be fairly easy. Most of you know someone that speaks a foreign language in your area that you would like to converse with. In addition, if you are friends, this would give you a built in practice partner. Most foreigners will be delighted that you are taking the time to learn their language, and a little about their culture. These friends may also help you achieve mastery of the language quicker, and speak with the accents that people understand faster than formal learning environments. There are so many programs available that choosing the right one for you may involve just a little investigation. Your local library, bookstore, or college counselors can help you with a choice. We have found berlitz.us, and rosettastone.com to be good programs, as well as the 15 minutes a day series for the language of your choice. If you just type in foreign language programs on your search engine on the computer, you will also find that there are many free learning programs as well. Just choose one that not only fits your language needs, but makes learning fun. If your time is limited you may want to go with a program that is geared for 15 minutes a day. You can always choose to study more, but are not tied down with long lessons, and it is easier to fit into busy schedules. If you have more time to commit, you may want to choose a program with 1 hour lesson plans. Some even choose to go to the country of their choice of language to learn! Whatever program you choose, or commitment you make, remember to have fun learning, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and practice, practice, practice. Your life will be richer, your friends will be impressed, and those you speak to will appreciate your effort. |
