| It is a proven fact that children who are encouraged to read at an early age do better in almost every aspect of the education system. Reading to a child even before they are able to read for themselves not only encourages the child to read, but provides a wonderful quality experience for parents. Reading books that are funny, scary, and interesting to children may awaken a desire that would otherwise remain dormant. When reading a book to a child that they have heard before, or are familiar with, try changing the story, and see if the child notices. Make the characters do funny things, or say things that make the child laugh or pay attention. This can lead to entire new game invention projects that include the entire family. One person gives a sentence, the next follows with a sentence of their own, and before you know it, an entire new story has been created. Make a variety of books available to your children. The library is a great source of free reading material, and also provides a great outing for kids to help stimulate interest. Once a child begins to read on his or her own, you may notice that their creativity and imagination develop as well. Books also provide a great way for reading children to entertain themselves, and parents may find that this free time is great for them to read or do other projects. If a child shows an interest in a certain subject, type of animal, project, or hobby, try to provide reading material to support his or her interest. With such a wide variety of free material available on the internet, and at your local library, there is no reason not to take advantage of it. When buying books, sites such as amazon.com can even track your interests and suggest books in the same genre or of similar interest. You can also obtain ratings for the books that you may be interested in buying or checking out at the library before you read them. Without reading, how would we know of a wonderful place such as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, the courage of the Spartans at Thermopylae, the heroism of marines at Iwo Jima, or the rare friendship and bravery of the characters in Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove saga? How would we learn to tile a floor, plant a beautiful flower bed or herb garden, fix a leaky faucet, or cast a fly line the correct way? Reading is such a great learning and teaching tool, that school becomes easier for children, studying is less a chore, and understanding and even writing become easier and more fun. There is no greater joy than being reacquainted with favorite characters in a book on a rainy or cold day, and letting your imagination take you to the Greek isles, the Badlands, the frozen tundra, or the sands of the Sahara. Help acquaint your child with these places, and suddenly their history, geography, reading and writing skills improve as well. Experience the joy of seeing a child read their first book, and you will have made a difference in the world, and helped make the world a better place.
