| Florida was discovered and named by Ponce de Leon in 1513. He was searching for the Fountain of Youth and he claimed the area for Spain. Then, over time the state would be held by both Spain and England until it was finally sold to the United States by Spain in 1819. During the 19th century Florida was a dangerous place with many wars being waged between the Seminole Indians. These wars did not end until 1842. Industry The industry in Florida is based mostly on agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. The biggest industries within manufacturing inlcuce electronics, publishing, equipement, printing, food processing, transportation equipment, and machinery. Agricultural products include grapefruit, oranges, and oher fruits. Also, potatoes, melons, sugar cane, strawberries, peanuts, cattle, and dairy products rank high on the list. Places to Visit Places to visit in Florida include Palm Beach, Miami Beach, St. Augustine, Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach, Key West, Disney World and the Orlando area, ST. Petersburg, Sarasota, Tampe, and NASA. The Epcot Center and Everglades Natioanl Park are both popular places to visit, too. State Facts State facts include the mockingbird as the state’s bird, the mockingbird and the state’s song, “Suwanee River.” The state is known as the sunshine state. The largest cities include Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Hialeah. |
