Family Gardens

The cost of food and transportation is up, and despair is rampant, but there are still things we can do that are beneficial and fun for our families. One of the things many families are doing to supplement food budgets, and provide a great project for all family members is to plant a small vegetable garden. While the same principles would apply to a flower garden, we are focusing this article on projects that decrease spending, increase your pantry, and provide projects for the family.

Vegetable gardens can provide basic salad, and side dishes for the family at a relatively low cost. Unless you are planning to market extra items, a small plot of land is all that is necessary for your garden. Plots usually laid out at 25’ by 50’ should be plenty for a small garden, and if you have more room and are more aggressive with your garden, that is fine as well. Even if you don’t have the room in your yard, there are still steps you can take to have a garden. Many municipalities offer garden areas to residents for free or a small fee, and the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Departments on military bases do as well. Some city residents have obtained permission to put garden boxes on rooftops, and some folks are getting into hydroponics, or small greenhouses, especially in colder climates.

After you have chosen your spot, and tilled the area with a small tiller, or hoe, you can mix in some topsoil and manure or potting mulch to add nutrients to the existing soil if necessary. Choosing your vegetable plants or seeds is largely personal preference or taste, but some of the easiest plants to grow are carrots, radishes, tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes. Others that may require poles, or mounds, would include beans, peas, cucumbers, and some varieties of tomatoes. Once you have decided on your preferred veggies, it is mostly just laying out where you want each to go, and following directions on your plant or seed packets to find the optimum time, spacing, and depth to plant. Children of any age usually like to get involved with the planting, and watching them grow cycle. They usually aren’t as enthusiastic about the weeding and maintenance part, but if you explain carefully, they will usually help. Some small pots of herbs are also fun to put with your garden, and even if you don’t eat them, will provide nourishment and breeding areas for butterflies.

Even if you are a novice gardener, you will find that neighbors, and friends, local farmers, feed and seed stores, and most hardware stores, will have advice, and materials to get started. You can also use your favorite search engine such as Google, or go to sites like, thegardenhelper.com or vegetablegardens.suite. This can add spice, fun, and food to your life, and open new horizons for your family. Good luck with your garden.
