| If you want your life to be a little more laid back, want lots of recreational opportunities, enjoy wildlife in its natural habitat, and a lower cost of living, you may want to check out north Alabama. Once out of the hustle of Birmingham, Gadsden, Huntsville, and Florence, the northern part of Alabama is made up of many smaller, rural communities that are a small life unto themselves. People still wave to each other, whether they know you or not, and will always lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Most of the northern part of the state is wooded, with lots of hardwoods mixed with evergreens, and is blessed with a wealth of rivers, reservoirs, streams, lakes and ponds. The William B. Bankhead national forest contains areas that are like the land before time. Places like Natural Bridge with its unusual rock bridge formation, waterfalls, and just east of there, the old turn of the century Looney’s Tavern. State parks abound with such beautiful camping, fishing, and boating areas like Buck’s Pocket, and Guntersville state parks on beautiful lake Guntersville. The entire northern part of the state is bisected by the gorgeous Tennessee river and all its lakes and watersheds. The Tennessee flows southwest from Knoxville, through the Chattanooga area and into Northeast Alabama where lake Guntersville is formed. From there it flows Northwest to form Wheeler lake, Wilson lake, and Pickwick lake on its journey north, back into Tennessee. These lakes constitute some of the best fishing, boating, camping, and recreational opportunities to be found anywhere in the United States. Living in these areas can still be relatively inexpensive, and lots of fun. There are several State parks that include caverns, with some beautiful scenery, like Rickwood Caverns State Park just north of Birmingham, and Cathedral Caverns State Park between Scottsboro and Huntsville. The foothills of the Smoky Mountains extend down into North Alabama, which provides a mountainous type landscape with great valleys and scenic areas to visit. Little River Canyon near Ft. Payne is worth a stop, as well as Noccalula Falls and park in Gadsden. Huge shopping malls can be found in Birmingham, Huntsville, Decatur, and Gadsden, but shopping at the outlet mall in Boaz is a favorite of many including out of state visitors. A couple of other lakes that are worth a mention for sightseers, fishermen, and explorers, are Weiss lake northeast of Gadsden, which is famous for black crappie and bass, and Lewis Smith lake north of Jasper, that is home to some of the most beautiful deepwater lake scenery in the South. This lake has hundreds of waterfalls, including some underwater, large bluffs, and great fishing as well. Fishing here also includes stripers and hybrids, which lure many to the water. To check out some of the other great attractions, visit www.northalabama.org, which will provide you with many web sites, and areas of interest in the area. North Alabama is home to some great kayaking, and canoeing areas with just a little research on where to go. Whatever your interests, you should be able to find something for every member of your family in this area. Where else can you buy homemade sorghum syrup, delicious divinity candies, walking sticks from local timber, and local fishing lures made by the locals for discerning fishermen? As always, you don’t know unless you go, so make some trip arrangements and get started. Who knows, you may just decide to stay!
