| California was noticed in 1542 by the Spanish navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo however the Spanish Mission to San Diego did not occur until 1769. In 1847, California became a US territory after it was surrendered to John C. Frémont by Mexico. Then, the next year Sutter’s Mill was the home to a gold discovery by James W. Marshall and this began the California Gold Rush. Thousands of settlers made their way to California and by 1964 California was even larger than New York. The majority of settles were Pacific Islanders and Asians California Industries The biggest industries in California include manufacturing, agriculture, biotechnology, tourism, and aerospace defense. The natural resources found in the state include cement, timber, petroleum, and natural gas. California Points of Interest California is popular across the world and there are many points of interest other than just Hollywood that are worth checking out. For example, in the southeast of California you may visit Death Valley, which is almost 300 feet below sea level. This is the lowest point in the entire nation. The highest point in the US is also located in California and is Mt. Whitney. One of the US active volcanoes, Lassen Peak, may also be found here. Other great places you will want to check out include Disneyland, Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Point Reyes National Seashore, San Simeon State Park, among others. Of course, don’t forget Hollywood with all of the movie stars! State Facts California’s state tree is the California redwood and the bird is the California valley quail. The state’s animal is the California grizzly bear and the fish is the California golden trout. The colors are blue and gold and the song is “I Love You, California.” The state’s nickname is the Golden State and its largest cities include Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Long Beach, Fresno, Sacramento, and others.
